How to back up your HTC Smartphone

As with many modern smartphones, the HTC One and HTC One Mini allow you to set up a daily backup of all your important data and settings. Not only does this ensure that you don’t lose anything if your phone dies, it also means it’s easy to set it up again on a new HTC phone (such as one of the HTC U models). There are several ways to back up your phone’s different data and settings, and you may need to use more than one to make sure everything is safely backed up.

How to set up HTC backup

This is the first step in making sure your HTC One is backed up (the utility uses free Dropbox storage to keep your content and settings). The built-in HTC Backup utility will allow you to back up and restore your home screen settings, including your BlinkFeed categories and headlines, your widgets, and your home screen layout.

The second thing that is backed up is all your accounts and passwords. HTC Backup can store the login details for your email account, social networks, apps like Evernote, and your Exchange ActiveSync server.

The last things backed up using this utility are your apps and settings. The settings backup includes your Internet favorites, any additions you’ve made to your personal dictionary, Wi-Fi network settings, and app screen settings, as well as any apps you’ve installed. In total, more than 150 important configurations will be backed up daily.

To start using HTC Backup, enable “Back up phone daily” during HTC One setup, or enable the feature in the main settings. Go to Backup and reset , and then tap Backup account . Choose your HTC account from the list and sign in if necessary.

You may also be prompted to sign in to your Dropbox account if you haven’t already done so. If you want your photos to automatically save to Dropbox as you take them, you can now tap to turn this feature on.

Go back to the main Backup & Reset screen, turn on Automatic Backup. Your HTC One will create a daily backup as long as you have a Wi-Fi or 3G/4G connection. Remember that the use of the 3G/4G connection to make backup copies may incur additional charges from your provider.

How to use HTC Sync Manager

Music, videos, calendar entries, documents, playlists, and other data that aren’t backed up by HTC Backup can be saved using the HTC Sync utility. HTC Sync is a separate piece of software that needs to be installed on your computer the first time you connect your HTC device to it via USB.

If the software does not install, you can download it yourself from HTC support pages (www.htc.com/support). Start the installer and follow the instructions to complete the installation. The next time you connect your phone to your computer via USB, the Sync Manager will open automatically.

You can easily set HTC Sync Manager to import all the music, photos, and videos on your phone to your computer. First, connect HTC One to your computer using the supplied USB cable. Then:

  • To copy music from phone to computer, click Music > Settings , and then select Copy all music from phone .
  • To copy photos and videos from your phone to your computer, click Gallery > Settings , and then select Automatically import photos and videos from phone .

If you are trying to create additional space on your phone, you can select Delete photos and videos from phone after import. This removes the media from your HTC One after it has been securely backed up. Click the Apply button to start the process.

Assuming this is the first time you’ve synced between your phone and your computer, click the Sync button to start the backup. You can repeat this process every time you connect your phone to your computer, or you can click Sync settings and select Automatically sync every time your phone connects from the available options.
