When installing the Windows upgrade from Windows 7, 8 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 , the error message is very common
0x80240031

Virus scanner cause of error 0x80240031
Many Windows users who receive the error code 0x80240031 report that it is due to the use of an antivirus program . Especially the program “TuneUP from AVG” seems to create problems with the Windows 10 upgrade , but other manufacturers also report about upgrade problems .
Even if it is actually not the right step to uninstall or deactivate the virus scanner , but for the Windows update process you should deactivate or uninstall the virus scanner or your Windows security software . After the successful upgrade process, you should of course undo it and use the latest virus software.
Reset Windows Update Service
Another reason for the update error can be a faulty Windows update service . But this is not a big problem, you can reset it as follows .
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptsvc
del C: ProgramData Microsoft Network Downloader qmgr * .dat
ren C: Windows SoftwareDistribution C: Windows SoftwareDistribution.DEL
net start cryptsvc
net start wuauserv
net start bits
With these commands, which you have to execute in an MS-DOS command prompt with administrator rights , you reset the Windows Update Service and rename the folder in which all Windows Update files are cached . Then you should completely restart your PC and run the installation or Windows upgrade again.
